West Hound?

While Lord Bassington-Bassington usually dislikes clothes bearing logos, there are some exceptions. On a polo shirt a discreet logo, such as a crocodile or laurel wreath, can add a small splash of colour.

And speaking of laurel wreaths, Fred Perry have reissued two classic polo shirts that are both stylish and classic and perhaps suitable for the hottest days of the year. We here at Bassington Manor have Perry shirts that are going on 17 years now, but it's perhaps time to expand the collection a little.

But which is best? The 1957 model with the classic West Ham colours?

Or the Perry Boy shirt?

While the maroon shirt is Lord Bassington-Bassington's favourite, it is a concern that wearing it might be seen as a show of support for football. His Lordship, of course, approves only of sports such as cricket or elephant polo.

  1. I vote for West Ham, especially if we change it to West Hound!

  2. My dear chap, what splendid reasoning! After Bassetocracy is introduced, we will of course see a lot of name changes and football clubs will be no exception. I've taken the liberty of stealing your idea for the title of this post.

  3. Dear Lordship, I admire your taste and excellent choice in classics. I personally like the "Perry Boy". Though I am not quite sure if I can wear that during my elephant polo sessions, red being the color of passion and agression, being an animal I have seen strange things happen in this flamboyant kingdom. Again, my deepest respect and gratuide to The Excellency. Fat cat baboon.

  4. I haven't worn an original style Fred Perry since my skinhead days but I did pick up a rather nice white lambswool FP with black details fairly recently. It has slightly longer collars and ribbed sleeve ends and waistband. I can't find any info on the hinterbews so I presume it must have been a limited thing.

  6. WDI, so you have been a skinhead? Interesting! I'd like to inquire whether you have written anything about the relationship between skinhead and dandyism.

Laguna Beach Fogey: That IS the most classic style, and the most easy to wear. But one of the things I appreciate about Perry shirts is the way they can inject colour into an otherwise simple outfit.

  7. I was indeed, for a number of years. The lure of pomade was too great though. That and the fact that skinheads and middle age are rarely aesthetically compatible.
I have never written on the subject but it is a given, for me at least, that real skinhead, mod and all shades between fall into the worker-dandyist constituency.

  8. Fascinating! My secretary, who belongs in the category of men that could be described as "follically challenged" and therefore sadly has little use for pomade, has a penchant for skinhead clobber that the man in the street would not recognize as such. For example, in the colder seasons he pretty much refuses to wear anything any coat apart from covert coats, and when on his way to the gym (where he should be more often) he carries an old Lonsdale bag.

If you do requests (so to speak) on your own blog I'd be very happy to read your thoughts on skinhead, mod etc.
